Which software should I learn first in animation?

If you've just decided you want to learn animation, you've probably already hit the first wall: not the drawing, not the timing, not the technique—the sheer number of programs everyone insists you need. Blender. Toon Boom. After Effects. Procreate. Maya. Krita. TVPaint. It's a lot, and picking wrong feels like it might cost you months.

Here's the good news: the choice is much simpler than it looks, because it isn't really about software at all. It's about which kind of animation you actually want to make.

Start With the Style, Not the Tool

Animation software is built around a specific workflow, and those workflows don't overlap much. A program built for drawing frame-by-frame doesn't work anything like a program built for rigging 3D characters. So before you install anything, get honest about which of these pulls you in:

  • 2D / hand-drawn — the classic Disney or anime look, frame-by-frame or digital "puppet" animation

  • 3D / CGI — Pixar-style characters, game cinematics, product renders

  • Motion graphics—titles, logo animations, explainer videos, UI animation

  • Stop motion—physical puppets, claymation, cutout animation shot frame by frame

Each has a natural starting software, and none of them require you to buy anything to get going.

2D / Hand-Drawn: Start With Krita or Blender's Grease Pencil

If you're drawn to traditional-feeling animation, Krita is the best free entry point. It's a full painting program with a built-in animation timeline, onion skinning, and frame management—everything you need to learn timing and spacing without paying a cent. When you're ready to go further, Blender's Grease Pencil tool lets you do 2D drawing inside a 3D space, which is a nice bridge if you think you'll eventually want camera moves or 3D backgrounds behind 2D characters.

Once you're serious and possibly working professionally, the industry standard becomes Toon Boom Harmony, but that's a "graduate to it later" tool, not a starting point.

3D / CGI: Start With Blender

This one isn't close. Blender is free, extremely capable, and has arguably the best beginner tutorial ecosystem of any creative software on the planet. It handles modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, and rendering all in one package, so you learn the entire pipeline without switching tools. Maya is still common in big studios, but its licensing cost and steeper learning curve make it a poor first stop—you can always pick it up later once you know the underlying concepts, which transfer easily.

Motion Graphics: Start With Adobe After Effects

If titles, kinetic typography, and slick UI animation are the goal, After Effects is genuinely the standard, not just the popular option. There's a real cost here (Adobe subscription), but the payoff is that most tutorials, templates, and job listings assume you already know it. There isn't a free equivalent that matches its ecosystem, so this is one case where paying early is worth it if the budget allows.

Stop Motion: Start With Dragonframe or Stop Motion Studio

Stop motion is the odd one out because the "software" matters less than your camera and lighting setup. Stop Motion Studio (free/cheap, works on phones and tablets) is a great way to learn the fundamentals—capturing frames, checking onion-skin overlays, and exporting. If you go further, Dragonframe is the professional tool used in actual studios, but it's overkill for someone just testing the waters.

If You Truly Can't Decide: Learn Blender

If none of the four categories above grabbed you more than the others, default to Blender. It's free, it covers both 2D (via Grease Pencil) and 3D animation in the same program, and the skills you build—timing, keyframes, easing, and staging—transfer directly to every other tool on this list. You're not locking yourself into a niche; you're building the vocabulary that every animation program speaks.

Whatever you pick, remember that the software is the least important part of learning animation. The twelve principles of animation—squash and stretch, timing, anticipation, and follow-through—were worked out on paper decades before any of these programs existed. Spend your first few weeks animating something absurdly simple, like a bouncing ball or a sliding block, before you touch a character rig or a fancy brush pack. The tool will teach you buttons. Only practice teaches you motion.
